Jide is the company that gained popularity for its sleek Android tablets. The company has now developed an operating system – Remix OS 2.0 – which is based on the Android-x86 project. The project is an initiative to bring Android to PC users who are using x86 chipsets – Intel and AMD. Remix OS 2.0 is available for download for free on Jide’s website.
According to Jide, “Hardware by nature is cold and inanimate”. The developers of Remix OS felt the need for an operating system which was simple and intuitive. Additionally, the operating system was created with the natural environment in mind. The Jide team wanted the operating system to be a reflection of the natural world that we live in.
The operating system created by Jide should allow you to access all the apps available in the Google Play Store from your Windows or Mac computer. Jide has modified Android into a form where it can be used on your PC. Jide advises that it is still in testing phase so users may encounter a bug or two in the process of using Remix OS 2.0.
The operating system is far from perfect when you would compare it with other operating systems designed for desktops. There are the limitations of an Android platform which have been ported along with the OS to desktops as well. Jide may have to work on developing it further to remove the technical limitations for a better user experience.
Jide advises that Remix OS 2.0, at this stage, is best for developers but it does not limit anyone else who wishes to download it as well. Advanced desktop users who are looking for a change can get a little adventurous and download the free Remix OS 2.0.
The bright side of using Remix OS 2.0 is that you can flash it to your USB drive and boot the OS from your USB device. An added benefit is that you can take the USB drive with you and boot other PCs that you use with Remix OS 2.0 as well.
At the time of booting the device you will find two options. You can run the OS in Resident mode or Guest mode. The Guest mode does not save any changes while the Resident mode will. There are no specifications or requirements for using the operating system on Jide’s website. All that is needed is an Intel or a Mac machine which can boot from USB.
As far as the USB is concerned, it is advised that you use one that is formatted to FAT 32 and has 8 GB space. The USB drive should have writing speed of 20 MB/s. With these specifications in mind you should be able to boot the Remix OS 2.0 to your system.
Remix OS 2.0 is a welcome change to users where desktops and laptops are invariably divided into Windows and Mac users with a very small number of users using Linux or any other operating system.
Android has already been tested on phones and tablets and its success is no secret. Anyone who is a fan of Android’s rich app ecosystem will find the idea of using Android on their PC to be a great one. If Android is able to successfully transition to PCs then users will have an OS which they have already used and are aware of its working.
