University libraries in Ghana: towards a new strategy of information

Introduction

This article describes the ongoing research into the development strategy for the Library of the University of Ghana. The research focuses on factors affecting the development of the strategic planning process to improve the ability of libraries to provide information services effectively. Since the structure of universities in Ghana have been largely derived from, or the model of universities in the UK, the project also needs some explanation of the current attitudes of strategic planning in several university libraries in the UK . It is expected that research and evaluation in this regard, the management of UK universities, libraries may give appropriate instructions to the management library of the University of Ghana.

The problems of university libraries in Ghana

The main problem of the university libraries in Ghana in the 1990s is its inability to obtain material for the library and information services, including those already reached in the 1950s. Among the many reasons the most important is the instability of government, especially during the years 1966 and 1983, when the various governments, mostly led by the army not only colleges and universities must be adequately funded. In addition, the student participation in the political struggle of the military regime had a negative impact on college and university library development because the universities were closed several times, sometimes for months. Very Ghana political instability is a gradual and continuous decline of the economy.
